Here's the argument in one line: in every era, a small set of industries drives most of the economy's efficiency gains — call these SMEGs. Governments and central banks then direct their money and policy support — MNFPs — toward those same industries, because that's where growth looks the strongest. The people who already own those industries capture most of the upside. Everyone else deals with the side effects: higher prices, and jobs that stop mattering as much. This has happened in farming, in factories, in the internet, and it's happening again, right now, in AI. Let's build this up piece by piece so the logic is airtight.

MONEY ISN'T JUST PAPER. IT'S A SYSTEM WITH A DESIGN FLAW

Before money, people bartered. A farmer with wheat who wanted rice had to find a rice farmer who happened to want wheat. That rarely lined up, so trade stayed small.

So humans invented money — something everyone agrees to accept in exchange for anything. Over centuries, different things served this role: cowrie shells in Africa, salt in Rome (this is where "salary" comes from), pepper in medieval Europe. These worked only as long as they stayed rare. Once trade opened up and supply increased, they stopped being scarce, and they stopped working as money.

Gold lasted longer because it stayed genuinely rare. But gold is heavy and dangerous to carry around. So people started leaving it in vaults — early banks — and carrying paper notes instead, each one a promise: "whoever holds this owns this much gold." Simple, and it worked.

Then bankers noticed something: not everyone came to collect their gold at the same time. So banks started printing more paper notes than they actually had gold for — say, notes for 150 units of gold while only 100 units sat in the vault. This is called fractional reserve banking. It worked fine, until people got nervous, rushed to withdraw at once, and the bank couldn't pay everyone. That's a bank run, and it kept destroying economies, including America's, again and again.

To stop this, the U.S. created the Federal Reserve in 1913 — a central bank whose job is to step in and rescue the system whenever it wobbles. But here's the part that matters:

"The Fed didn't end fractional reserve banking. It made it permanent and official. Money creating more money became the actual operating system of the modern economy, not a temporary workaround."

WHY THE SAME PEOPLE ALWAYS GET RESCUED

Economist Hyman Minsky spent his career explaining what happens next. His idea, in plain words: calm periods make banks and investors overconfident. They take bigger risks and borrow more. The system stretches further and further — until it snaps. Then the government steps in, bails everyone out, and the cycle restarts, usually at a bigger scale than before.

The Fed didn't stop this pattern. It manages it — delaying each crisis, which quietly sets up the next, larger one.

The real question is: who benefits every time the government steps in to save the system?

Almost always, it's the people who were already closest to where the money flows — the owners of whatever industry is generating the most growth at that moment. That's the seed of everything that follows.

THE LOOP, IN PLAIN TERMS

Think of it like a river. Water (capital) always finds the lowest point and flows there — and in every economic era, that "lowest point" is whichever industry is generating the most efficiency and growth. Once the river starts flowing that way, government policy tends to widen the channel rather than redirect it, because that industry is where GDP growth, jobs headlines, and stock market numbers are coming from.

SO:

The SMEG of the era generates outsized value.

MNFP support — cheap credit, subsidies, tax breaks, bailouts — flows toward that SMEG.

The people who already own it capture most of the gain.

Everyone else absorbs the side effects: inflation, wage stagnation, and eventually, job loss.

And because the owners now have more capital and more influence, they help shape the next round of policy too — which tends to flow back to them again, or to the next SMEG they're best positioned to own.

To be fair, this isn't an unbreakable law of physics. Countries have pushed back against it before — through strong labour unions, wealth and inheritance taxes, and universal welfare systems, which is roughly the Nordic story, and which also explains why wages grew broadly across the US and Europe for a couple of decades after World War 2. The loop is a strong tendency, not a guaranteed outcome — but left unchecked, it's the default, and most economies do very little to check it.

THE LOOP ACROSS FOUR AGES

THE AGRICULTURAL AGE

The first SMEG was farming itself — land, irrigation, livestock. Whoever controlled these controlled survival. Government policy of the time — land grants, irrigation projects, favourable taxes — went to whoever already owned land: feudal lords, large landowners, colonial plantations. Egypt's irrigation systems were state-built. Roman policy subsidized large estates. The pattern: the state invests in the era's most efficient industry, and existing owners capture the return. Everyone else farms for subsistence.

THE INDUSTRIAL AGE

The new SMEGs were railroads, steel, and electricity — industries that reshaped the whole economy around themselves. Government fiscal policy funded them directly: the U.S. handed railroad companies over 170 million acres of land, an area bigger than Texas, to build the transcontinental railroad. The result: a handful of industrialists — Carnegie, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Morgan — built fortunes so large they rivalled national budgets. By 1913, Rockefeller alone was worth roughly 2% of U.S. GDP. The workers who laid the tracks got wages that barely covered survival.

THE WEB AGE

The tech age compressed this same pattern into just a couple of decades. Its SMEGs — computers, semiconductors, the internet — were built with public money first: the internet started as ARPANET, a U.S. defence project; semiconductors got heavy government funding; the web's core protocols came from publicly funded research at CERN. Government built the highway. Private capital, helped by cheap interest rates, then claimed everything built on top of it.

One date matters a lot here: August 15, 1971, when the U.S. cut the dollar loose from gold entirely. From that point, money creation had almost no hard limit.

The dot-com crash of 2000-2001 was met with rate cuts and fresh liquidity, which funded the next wave: Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple. Then came 2008 — the worst crisis since the Depression — and the Fed's response was on a completely different scale: its balance sheet grew from about $900 billion to $8.9 trillion by 2022, roughly a 10x jump. That new money mostly flowed into stocks, real estate, and other assets — and ownership of those assets is heavily concentrated.

On the government (fiscal) side: the U.S. CHIPS Act put over $50 billion directly into chip manufacturing. The Stargate Project, announced in 2025, committed $500 billion to AI infrastructure, and had already deployed over $400 billion by late that year. Governments everywhere — the EU, China — are doing versions of the same thing: putting public money behind AI.

On the capital markets (monetary) side: the five biggest tech companies — Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle — spent a combined $448 billion building AI infrastructure in 2025 alone, more than the GDP of Denmark, Finland, and New Zealand combined. Total global AI spending crossed roughly $1.5 trillion in 2025. Add private investment, public subsidy, and the wider supply chain, and total capital flowing into AI is estimated at $2.5-3 trillion.

Who owns this SMEG? NVIDIA (roughly 90% of the AI chip market), Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, OpenAI's backers, and a small set of chip and power infrastructure companies. A very small number of entities, funded and protected by both fiscal and monetary policy at once — exactly like the railroads, exactly like the early internet.

WHAT THE ECONOMISTS ACTUALLY SAY

You don't have to take this on faith — there's real academic work behind it. The clearest is Thomas Piketty's finding, often written as r > g:

The return on owning capital (r) tends to grow faster than the economy as a whole (g).

In plain terms, if you own assets (stocks, property, businesses), your wealth compounding faster than wages ever can. This isn't about effort or laziness — it's closer to how the system is built.

It's worth being honest here: Piketty's own proposed fix for this was mostly at the government level — progressive taxes, inheritance taxes, redistribution. He wasn't writing a playbook for individuals to build personal ownership. Broke2Alpha's use of his finding is to explain why the gap exists — the response of "so build your own ownership stake" is our conclusion, not necessarily his.

The numbers back up the diagnosis regardless: the top 1% globally own 45% of all world wealth. Global billionaire wealth grew by $2 trillion in 2024 alone — about $5.7 billion a day. Between 2019 and 2025, real wages fell 12% worldwide, while pay for the 1,500 highest-paid CEOs globally rose 54%.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

INFLATION AS A TAILWIND OR TAX

If you own assets, inflation is a tailwind; your property and investments grow with it. If you don't own assets, inflation is a straight tax on your life — your salary buys less every year.

The mechanism above has one direct side effect: inflation. When trillions of dollars get created, prices rise on everything — food, rent, fuel, education. The cost of ever getting started (a house, a business, a portfolio) keeps climbing.

Now layer AI on top of that. This is where I'll be upfront: what happens next is genuinely debated among economists, not settled. One camp thinks AI will mostly augment human work for a long while yet — making people more productive rather than replacing them outright, similar to what happened with computers and the internet.

My read, based on how fast both mental work (writing, coding, analysis, legal and financial research) and physical work (via humanoid robots from companies like Boston Dynamics, Figure, and Tesla) are being automated simultaneously, is that this transition looks different from the ones before it — because in past transitions, displaced workers could always shift into a different kind of labour that a human was still needed for.

This time, both categories are being addressed at once. That's a real risk worth taking seriously, even if it isn't a certainty.

SO WHAT DO YOU ACTUALLY
DO WITH THIS?

This loop is powerful, it's old, and no single person is going to switch it off. But it also isn't a closed door — the loop doesn't ask your permission before it runs, and it doesn't ask permission before you find a way to stand inside it either.

What that looks like, practically: understanding which assets belong to the SMEG of this era, rather than the last one. Understanding how monetary and fiscal policy actually move, because that's where the rules of this game are written — not in headlines, but in policy documents most people never read.

Understanding where your own country sits in this global structure, because that shapes how much of the SMEG you can realistically access. And building actual ownership — in assets, in equity, in a business — instead of staying purely a wage-earner, because wage-earners are precisely who this loop tends to leave behind.

Strategy. Positioning. Ownership. Or economic irrelevance.

Those are the real choices in front of you in the AI era. Understanding the loop doesn't make you immune to it — but it's the difference between reacting to it after the fact, and getting ahead of it while there's still time to choose.
